ARAB FLIGHT CREW
« on: September 26, 2008, 02:03:28 PM »

A brand spanking new Airbus 340-600, the largest passenger airplane ever built, sat in its hangar in Toulouse, France without a single hour of airtime. Enter the Arab flight crew of Abu Dhabi Aircraft Technologies (ADAT) to conduct pre-delivery tests on the ground, such as engine runups, prior to delivery to Etihad Airways in Abu Dhabi.

The ADAT crew taxied the A340-600 to the run-up area. Then they took all four engines to takeoff power with a virtually empty aircraft. Not having read the run-up manuals, they had no clue just how light an empty A340-600 really is.

The takeoff warning horn was blaring away in the cockpit because they had all 4 engines at full power.

The aircraft computers thought they were trying to takeoff but it had not been configured properly (flaps/slats, etc.). Then one of the ADAT crew decided to pull the circuit breaker on the Ground Proximity Sensor to silence the alarm. This fools the aircraft into thinking it is in the air. The computers automatically released all the brakes and set the aircraft rocketing forward.

The ADAT crew had no idea that this is a safety feature so that pilots can't land with the brakes on.

Not one member of the seven-man Arab crew was smart enough to throttle back the engines from their max power setting, so the $200 million brand-new aircraft crashed into a blast barrier, totaling it.

This is the part that really bothers me,

The extent of injuries to the crew is unknown, for there has been a news blackout in the major media in France and elsewhere.
"Coverage of the story was deemed insulting to Moslem Arabs".  hammer

I don't see how it would embarrass the Muslim Arabs. There's STUPID in every culture/nationality/race and there was certainly STUPID on that airplane.

By the looks of that nose, I don't think it ended well for our tan brothers.  Wouldn't want to insult the Muslims as their peaceful religion would force them to blow up the local newspaper.

Now, the rest of the story, thanks to a close friend of mine. This is a quote.

Funny, But as usual, this is not what actually happened.
The Story has many incorrect statements such the GPW switch as it does-not-override the Anti-Skid  braking system to this affect.
There are sensors switches (Squat) through out the landing gear that is the actual factor for such issues.
Second the engines thrust levers are actually controlled by an electronic system called FADEC (yes I know another acronym to remember but there are many more herein) which has had issues in all aircraft including Boeing Aircraft relating to this manner. FADEC was responsible for not responding to a thrust reduction command by the test pilot he ahd placed the engines in "Idle-Detent" at time of aircraft movement. If you will recall a similar thing happened with another earlier Airbus aircraft, but this was the failure to add power via computer/fadec and the aircraft slowly descended (crashed & burned) into the trees at an airshow some years ago.
Third and most important to the EGO of all of us, is the ATP (Airline Transport Licensed Piloted) who was Type Rated Pilot with much experience in the aircraft and at the controls WAS-NOT an Arab, but rather a designated Test-Pilot/Engineer from Boston, Ma. born in Redding, CA. He was with three other french "ground test engineers"
The reason the 380,000 pound aircraft bolted into the concrete jet blast deflector at approximately 18-Knots was that the entire anti skid system after coming "walking" out of its Chocks failed to stop due to a computer issue which was why the aircraft was being tested in the first place.
The aircraft was "never at full power" when this happened but thrust levers were set at 65% of N1. The Aircraft was incorrectly chocked with chocks half their correct size and the aircraft simply "walk the chocks." This improperly reccomemded chock size was due to an incorrect but recently Up-Dated maintenance service manual to a fact which was argued by the Test Pilot prior to the accident. Second; the aircraft's original distanced was incorrectly placed in relationship to the jets blast deflector wall in case the aircraft walked the chocks.  The other contributing half of this accident stemmed from an argument from the ATC ground control who has the ultimate say as to where aircraft may be located on the Airfield to conduct ground tests.
Last Point, the writer states that this aircraft had "No-airframe-Time.' This is not true as the aircraft when first completed Green meaning no interior or paint, just a cromate type green primer, it is flown on numerous flight tests, long before placing 10 million dollars worth of interior and passenger equipment inside the cabin. Plus, this particular serial number was actually shown to have been in service for a short time with Virgin Atlantic Airlines and was sold at approximately 4,309 Flight hours so VIR could take delivery of an up-dated 340 series model aircraft to fit their needs.
Yes, it was a big screw up and yes there was serious injures. But as much as we would like to use that ever present good ol American bowed-up ego of insulting others through the modern miracle of E-mails at Arabs or Jews or Chinese, or Indians or Europeans ( which most of us are descendants) or whom ever as long as it make us feel superior to the rest of the quickly advancing world, it does not change the fact of what really happened.

I hope this clears up some things
