Picked up another Dart/ 67 HT this time 273 I have a question? or 5
« on: September 28, 2008, 02:26:11 PM »

I am buying or should I say buying back a 67 Drat HT I sold to a buddy a few years back dirt cheap. hes decided hes done with cars and has never started this car, so I am giving him what he paid for it and buying it now that my 67 POST car is 90 percent done. Its a red car originally and a column shift 273 car. I am hoping it runs as I never tried as I was putting the 340 into something and decided to use the post car.

Now, if the 273 runs well, I plan on leaving it for a while as a driver. What kind of mileage are you getting on your 273 cars.

I plan on Eventually using a big block or HEMI and doing a clone HEMI or bigblock car. Who is where is th ebst place to buy a HEMI hood or the six pack style scoop, the low and or high styles I have not decided which I like best.  Thanks for any info.

Dave

I've heard around 16 city and 23 highway, but expect 13/18 for a car with an engine that "runs" and not much else.

Here's my question:
is it a 273 2 or 4?

My Satellite has a stock 318/auto with 2.90's out back and I get about 18-20 mpg.

I got as high as 15.5 in my old 66 Dart around town (273 four barrel/904/2.93) and as high as 18 on the highway with the same engine in my old 66 Barracuda (four speed with 3.23s).

Thats a great question. When I owned it originally, I was going to take the motor out and go big block or HP. So when I get it back I will have to check. I guess I was just assuming it was a 2 barrel, but really dont know for sure. I do know that for now I am just going to try and get it running and drive it. I may see if I have th eparts t make it a console shift and do that only for the time being.

If it's a factory 4 barrel, you'll get around the gas mileage of Jim's, if it's a factory 2, you might do a little better.

I've heard the 273-2's do pretty well in A-bodies, but most of them I've heard of were post cars, cheap 4-doors, Barracudas, and Valiants so it'd probably do worse than those. I get about 13 city and 18 highway with my 340, 727, and 3.23 open diff. It doesn't like going under 55, but is happy to go over it.

My 67-273, 2V has about 6K on the engine with a three speed. I punched it .030, dropped in a mild Isky cam and ran dual 2-1/2" pipes with turbo mufflers out the back. Sounds mean and gets 21 MPG. Stock 2-V heads, by the way.    Grin

I had a 67 273 4spd Cuda back in the 70's. I think it had something like 297 gears. I tried to see how good of gas milage I could squeeze out of it. On a long trip to the beach I kept the speed to 55, whole trip was highway, and I got a solid 27 MPG. After that I went to headers, intake, carb, and Camando cam and have no realistic data, Joe.

My 69 Dart GT has a 273 4bbl with headers, 904 transmission, and 2.93 gears and I was getting 25 mpg. I am  not driving it now because it is being upgraded to big block.

Are most 67 273 Dart equipe with 904s or 727s? Just curious. If I make any changes to this at all for the moment, it will be a set of buckets and a console and shifter.  This sooner or later will also be  abig block for I am just finishing up the 67 POST 340-6 dart, so that will be enough fror now and I have other cars as well, so the thirst is no so bad.

904s, don't think 727 was used on smallblocks till '68. If the car was a GT it should have buckets unless it's a convertible...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe that 727's were used on the 340 or big block versions only. Also, they mostly had the 7 1/4 rearend setup as well. The GTS had the 8 3/4.
Also, you might check out your VIN to see exactly what you have there. Grin

I know most 273-2s had 7-1/4"s and I know a LOT of earlier 273-4s had 7-1/4"s, but I think after '65 they became pretty commonplace on 273-4 cars.

Yeah, the 340s and big blocks used 727s but the big blocks aren't small blocks and the 340s came out for '68.  Grin

D is a 273-2 car, E is a 273-4 car, B is a 225... it's the fifth character. D is moderately common, B is probably the most common hands-down, and E is not as rare as you might think. Does that mean an E car ain't worth keeping original? Absolutely not, even a D car is worth keeping orginal maybe 8k for a D car and 15k for an E car.
