Core plug question?
« on: September 29, 2008, 09:38:49 PM »

I am finally going to pull my motor this week because of the lack of mine able to hold water...It is just the plugs, any tips or tricks?

While I had my 440 out and sitting on the floor, I pulled each core plug out of the block and flushed with high pressure water while using a piece of coat hanger to scrape around inside the bottoms of the water jackets to loosen up any rust or sediment.

I use permatex gask-a-cinch (or whatever it is called) around the opening in the block as well as the edge of the core plug and pound it in with an appropriate sized socket.

I always use brass plugs and stake them in.

Yes, you can pound them in too far.  If you do, you'll drop in into the block and will ruin the core plug trying to get it back out.  Not a big deal, but then you need another plug.  I pounded mine in until the edge was about 1/16" past the outermost part of the hole in the block.
