Moser vs. Strange axles? which is better/ do you prefer?
« on: September 30, 2008, 12:27:32 PM »

Hey guys,

I have been looking at axles for my 8-3/4 and cant decide between moser or strange....I have heard the strange axles are stronger than Moser and cheaper as well....is this true, or is this just people's personal opinions? I'd like to know what you guys think of the two, and whether your experience with either product was good or bad.

thanks

I'll never buy axles from moser ever again.  When I got mine for a custom length 8 3/4, they were a tad long.  I called them and they told me to grind some off the ends of them.  I don't know about you, but when I buy $400 axles, I want them to fit.

From now on, I will buy Dutchmans from Dr. Diff.  Their axles are very high quality.  Also, I like the fact that the hub is thicker than other brands.

Dutchman is right down the street so that's what I use. I got a good deal on the Strange that I'm using now and have never had never had issues.

strange lists their SS axles at 396 dollars...not sure what the moser equivalent is....if its the custom alloys, the mosers are about 415....for the mosers and strange's, this includes bearnings, studs and retainers

moser made me ship my stock amc axels to them  throw money  so they would be sure to get them right..........they sent me one 1/2 inch too short..........then i had to send them the f#cked up one  throw money  to show i wasnt lying, and they made me a new one for free  Roll Eyes    the new one was 3/8 inch too long, so i heated it up with the grinder  Frustrated

I've heard nothing but good stuff regarding Strange.
Regarding Moser, I only dealt with them once.  I bought a complete rearend from them last fall.  Everything was perfect.  Fast, professional service.  The rearend was built exactly to my specs.  I have no complaints.

The reason I am interested is because i can get a really good deal right now on Moser 30 splines that are good for up to 500 horsepower...only thing with Moser is that none of their axles come with warranty unless they are 35 spline and up, which would require me to get a spool....I have to look at both brands pricing again see what the better deal is...the moser guy I am dealing with seems very trustworthy and knows what he's talking about when it comes to the Mopar stuff, so im not worried....As far as performace/ reliability issues, has any of them given you guys any problems? thanks for all the responses so far

No problems, but I have street tires, automatic transmission, and 35 spine axles.  So I expect my rearend to outlive me.

I assume 30 spline fits a stock sure grip?  What is the deal they are offering now?  Axles will be on my list when I finish building the 500.

well i found a wholesaler of of FABO forum and I have been communicating with him about these axles...qkcuda, i see that you are in canada too...I am in Markham, Ontario and he has quoted me 55.25 on shipping to my place, and will sell me the axles fully loaded at a good price...however, the deal only lasts till october 31st...if you are interested, pm me for some more info...im still not 100% sure if im going to get them as i have to talk to my dad about whether or not he thinks its a good deal, but i will most likely purchase them considering they are moser quality for the price of some cheaper brands....anybody else want to share their experience about either brands?

If you are using an 8 3/4 the axles should be the last thing to worry about.  I waisted 2 ring and pinons on mine and never had any axle stress on my stock resplined, 30 splined axles.  I would buy the least expensive axles if I needed new ones.

Matthew your PM box was full.  Here is the response Trevor sent me.

Dave,

That part # would work.  As far as shipping goes, it would run $27.50.  The only way I can offer a shipping discount would be if both sets of axles would be on one invoice.  If you both pay separate, it will be on 2 invoices.  And for the payment option, you do not have to have a paypal account to pay with paypal. All you have to have is an email address.  I can send you the link if you wish when you guys finalize the order.  Otherwise, I will have to have you send in a Money order to my rep. @ Moser payable to that rep.in his name and then the $ exchanges several hands.  We can work that out later. Just decide if you guys want to pay together or separate and I will give a total(s) and we can work out payment info at that time.  All the info on the axles are a done deal.  Thanks.  TP

Chryco

I noticed in the picture you have the green bearings with what looks like an attached retainer.  I am about to order axles with the RP bearings which should be like yours.  The other ones are M bearings which have an external snap ring the retainer rides against.  I haven't been able to find a good picture of them anywhere.  How are they attached to the bearing?  Any issues installing them?

Thanks Dave

As far as I can remember , the flange is part of the outer race . The whole works is pressed onto the axle and the axle depth is then carefully set. The bearing is the tack welded to the axle so it can`t go anywhere. The tack is not a huge thing and is there so the bearing can`t readily move sideways.

My $.02...ran Strange in my '62 Savoy for awhile...broke one...replaced it...started checking axles for twist more often...other axle twisting badly. Replaced both with Moser and no more axle problems. The car was 3100# with driver. Ran 6.60's in 1/8. 1.40 60 FT. Not a real killer but the Strange's evidently didn't like it.

Just curious , were these race or street type axles ? What diff. were you running? My original race Dana 60 axles  have had years of passes with pretty serious smallblocks and Hemis , with only one spline out twisted.

What ever happened to Strange Canada? They went under the name Bear Strange. They used to offer good prices in Canada. Chryco, I think Chris Derkson uses them in his Firebird.

I had a long conversation with Cass (Dr. Diff) about 30 spline axles, bearings and what not.   I just purchased some 8.75, 30 spline, 28" axles for the stock A body housing.  Under $300 shipped with Green bearings and studs.  Brandy new axles.  He'll cut the final length anything you want.  Very nice guy to deal with.

Green Bearings.  Cass said there are 3 types, but the 2 I specifically asked about were the ones with the integral flange (RP400) and floating flange that draws on the snapring.   He recomends the one that uses the snap ring, and that is what he sells.  The rationale is:  the integral flange bearing need to mount up perfectly flush OR there will be some sideloading of the bearing.

Mopar Performance sells the ones with the integral flange. $80 as set?Huh   I've got a brand new set sitting on the shelf without a home.  I bought them for the chally from MP and never installed them.  If anyone wants to buy them...make and offer!

As soon as I finish some welding, I will be pulling the axles from my  Strange custom- built dana, that I bought in 1987. In order to install the backing plates.
I am wondering what type of green retaining system they installed.

i have moser axles in both darts.  no complaintes. one set is in a dana that i narrowed and ordered them myself the other is in a dana that i had narrowed and he also ordered the axles for cheaper due to being a dealer.  no problems whatso ever o nthe length, they asked exactly how i measured since i didnt have old axles, i told them and they came out just as i wanted. i wouldnt spend the cash on real good axles for a 30 spline setup.

35s are better that 30 spline for sure.  The Dr. Diff axles?  I don't even know who makes them.  He buys them in bulk, splined, and cuts them to a final length, depending on whcih type of OEM suregrip you have.  with the cone style, 28" is perfect.  He mentione that Yukon are 27 7/8, giving a little less spline engagement.

Dr. Diff is now selling over Ebay, a new gig for him.
