My '70 Dart has the same width wheel opening as the '67/'69 cars. It is minitub with springs relocated. There is no need for a 12" wide rim. I have 15x10's with 325-50-15 mickey's and they only barely fit. Opening is 14" and sectional width of tires is 13.5".

I have your tires. A 12" wheel won't work on a mintub and relocate.

There is no need for a 12" wide rim.

MORE OF A PREFERENCE THAN A NECESSITY REALLY

I have 15x10's with 325-50-15 mickey's and they only barely fit.

RIGHT. YOU HAVE ROUGHLY A 12" WIDE TIRE ON 10" WHEEL.. I THINK I WOULD HAVE ROUGHLY THE SAME CLEARANCE GOING WITH A LARGER AND WIDER WHEEL WITH A
LOWER PROFILE TIRE

Opening is 14" and sectional width of tires is 13.5".

IN OTHER WORD: FROM THE FRAME RAIL/SPRING TO INSIDE LIP OF THE QUARTER IS 14"
AND THE CARCASS OF YOUR TIRE IS ROUGHLY 13.5" ?

By doing that work you'll end up with 14-14.5" OF AIR SPACE  to work with. What you put in there is up to you, however for street driving without rubbing anything you should have a min. of 3/4" airspace on each side of the tire. Less than that will hit the sides. So that gives you 12.5-13" sidewall-to-sidewall(sectionwidth). But keep in mind, advertised section width is measured on the recommended rim width - if you use a wider rim, the section width will increase, so you have to account for that.
Even low-profile tires(35 series) stick out about 1/2" from the rim, so on a 12" rim, you'll be at 13", which is about the limits, but this is assuming you can find the perfect sized 35-series tire to fit on a 12" wheel.
You can do it, but you'd have to be careful with dimensions and backspacing on the rim because there will be no room for error.

Also, if you find some kind of specialty tire size that works, be warned that if it's not a popular or common size, it can be discontinued at any time - I had this happen to a couple guys last year that bought tire sizes used on a particular model Porsche - by the time the cars were finished, the tire sizes were no longer available, which forced them to order another set of custom rims that would allow a more commonly available tire size - those guys were pissed....

It can be done, but like Bill said, you better be nuts on with the measuring and selection.  I have 17"x11" wheels w/ 315/35s, and there is probably a touch over an inch of clearance on both sides.  Once these tires "wear out"  Smiley  I might go with a 335/35.  I'm pretty sure they will fit, but even that is pushing it...  This is with the wells opened up and figuring in some trimming on the quarter panel lips.

Mine are 295-50-15 on 10's and they fill the opening nicely but the chassis guy said I could push and get the 12's but it looked like trouble
