« on: March 22, 2006, 12:17:34 AM »

Saw this over on Moparts, have never heard of it. Some of you guys may have seen it, but it was news to me.

I would guess if you do what he stated it would work. Some areas would be hard to get to with the roller, so I guess a small foam brush would ne needed too.

I seem a semi (red) and a 71 Torino (black) that was painted with a spray can. You could not tell it. They wet sanded between coats and in the end buffed the paint.

Rustoleum goes on shiny and is durable. Don't know how it would stand up to the UV rays. Put it on smooth enough, multible coats and wet sand it should give a nice finish.

You try it and show us your results drinks

I believe it. I once helped a couple of friends roll out a van in a boathouse with Interlux 2-part polyurethane hull paint in Blu-Glo White. Smooth, shiny, and damn bright.

I've been following that thread for a while now; it definitely looks like an idea. Everyone seems to be having problems with the correct mixture of thinner and prep issues; anyone who's painted anything knows that these are critical steps. I'm waiting for someone to get a solid result before I run out and buy some... Wink

This one came up in off-topic section a while back and I still don't believe it.  I'd rather get $50 worth a rattle paint, as long as you want a white car...don't ask, but it does work.

I've seen a car done with a roller. Thats what it looked like.
On the other hand, I knew a guy who sprayed a nova with Centari through an airless. After alot of rubbing it looked OK.

It was a real marathon but I finished reading that thread all the way through

This would be a little more than a $50 job (since it's $165 per gallon) but has anyone tried
POR-15 Hardnose paint? The instructions say it can be applied with a brush or roller and it will lay down flat with no brush marks... just sand the existing primer with 240 grit, clean and apply. I'm tempted to try a pint on an old panel first instead of buying a large quantity.

Hello everyone. I'm "Exit1965" over on moparts, and I've been doing a lot of experimenting with this technique and have posted many pictures of my test areas. I was having issues with scratchability, but recently I have started to think it was because I was using odorless mineral spirits, which evap. slower, and was not letting enough curing time between coats, plus the weather has been cold and wet (car is garaged, but it's still cold and damp).

Anyways I am now doing some more experimenting with black rustoleum professional and regular mineral spirits, and though I've only applied one coat it's not at all scratchable after 10 hours, so it is very promising. And to think i almost hung up my roller due to the scratchability I was seeing before..

If the surface is smooth and fairly without scratches, once you've rolled on 6-7 coats, you can get a pretty nice shine out of it using rubbing compound and polish and glaze. My only real hesitation was the scratchability, but I think now I know the solution- reg. mineral spirits and more dry time between coats. That seems to have taken care of the scratchability problem.

I will keep adding to that giant thread over on moparts with pictures and such. There is a guy, Jeff, who recently posted some pics of his test area using black paint, it looks very nice and I'm hoping for the same.

If I can get this black area to look nice, then I'll either consider black or canvas white for my 67 Dart GT. I've got miscellaneous pictures on my flickr site.

I have a 69 Monterey (aka land barge) that I would be interested in trying this...

I tried to keep up with the thread at Moparts, but it just got out of control.

Was there ever a resolution as to what products should be used state side?  I know there were some differences or "unknowns" between Tremcald and Rustoleum.

A short summary of products and technique would be great, for those people that do not want to spend 8 hours reading that thread...

If it was already done over at moparts and I missed it, I appologize.  If you could provide a link that would be great.

Thanks,
Andy

Just use rustoleum or rustoleum professional, whichever has the color you like. There are tint bases available if you want a custom color. In my experience there isn't a huge selection of colors at local hardware stores, many fewer than actually exist, but there are some nice ones.
