rear shock recommendation
« on: June 23, 2009, 02:31:37 PM »

Hey guys, i need to replace the rear shocks on my 71 scamp since they are damaged quite badly and figured while im at it i may as well upgrade them in the process...the rear end is an a-body 8-3/4 with adjustable pinion snubber and stock springs with a leaf added...I was interested in the summit adjustable shocks, but im not sure which ones would fit the abody application (all i could find was e body and b body rear shocks and only abody shocks for the front)...has anybody used these shocks before? does anybody recommend any other brand of shocks? i was looking at the summit ones due to price, so im not really interested in any high dollar shocks...something cheaper that will work fine with my setup for now would be great...all opinions are appreciated

thank you

I used on my 1965 barracuda w/ thesame setup, 1965 D150 pickup truck rear shocks. They are about 2" longer . That is what you want with the super stock springs.

I have heard about using the truck shocks before, but I am not using the SS springs, just a snubber...do i still want that really long travel? (I would assume so but it doesnt hurt to ask)...dont know how easy it is to find worn d100 shocks around my parts...anyone have any experience with the summit stuff or any other off the shelf aftermarket shock?

also, if i wanted the benefits of the longer travel, could i not just order an adjustable shock for the rears that has 2 inches more travel over factory? i would think that having both the extra travel and adjustability would be the best of both worlds? is there universal shocks out there for the rears that i may be able to make work like this?

Don't skimp on shocks would be my suggestion.

By some good adjustable shocks, like ranchos 9 ways or konis if you want to get the car to hook up.  Good shocks make a huge difference.

ive heard that good adjustable shocks help from some people, but then ive heard just as many say thast long worn out shocks provide the exact same times and traction...so for the situation i am in right now (which is young, broke, and not that fast) i think the cheaper shocks will do...does anybody know what years of d100 shocks are compatible? i dont think my parts guy would be able to get 1965 d150 shocks, but 70's stuff should be no problem.

I know you want to go with a cheap shock, but if you get the QA-1's from Mancini you will have them for ever.  They are rebuildable, plus 10 way adjustable.

Im using truck shocks from a d100 rwd works great its a bolt on part except for the top bushing you will have to put in the steel tube in it.
They are not expensive and works great both for street and racing, I also use a pinjon snubber aswell.
I just ordered stock replacement shocks for the pickup at my local dealership...

I second what West said.

Looks like that NAPA part number 4Huntin' listed is only $17 ea. Not bad.
