front end rise
« on: June 23, 2009, 10:57:39 PM »

A buddy of mine talked to caltrac and they told him their system works best if you have 4to 5" rise in the front suspension (measured from the center of the spindle to the fender lip at rest then jacked up) sure enough he had 5",the car 67 Dart 402,big ball joint disk brake front.
So then we tried my car 71 dart 440,6 cylinder t bars, large ball joint disk brake front end. I had 2" of body rise.my upper control arm bumpers are removed and there is 2.5" clearance between the mounting point for the rubber bumper and knob shaped protrusion formed in the lower side of the upper control arm. the lca still has the rubber bumper in place(2" thick)and has 1/2" clearance to the k member.we also tried it with the front shocks disconnected ,no change. this has got me scratching my head i can see no obvious difference in the cars, anyone got any idea whats going on here? and do you need that much rise?

If your cars hooks OK, then travel is not an issue.  If your traction is questionable, you should have the travel recommended.  Here is my Dart with Cal-Tracs and 2-3" travel.

The strut rod may be causing that. Any chance you have new stiff bushings or maybe even poly bushings? They really reduced wheel travel on my car. I went with Bills adjustable strut rods and they travel smooth as silk now.

Something is too tight. I won a bet in 1970, having a Duster 318, three speed manual.
I bet I could pick up the front tires. Money flowed. I took the car home and removed the front shocks; came back, got it rolling in first gear, and goosed it 3 times. wheels came off the ground 2" the 3rd time.
Some were pissed, but from a standing start was never part of the bet.
That was brand new suspension.
I think you have a bind; not shocks.
