Topic: OK, School me on body work and paint. My D-body (Read 1015 times)

Well what the hell is a D-body? Figured I'd get a few looks on that one. In the pics you can see my newest project. My intentions are to pull the bed and build a flat bed so I'm just dealing with the cab. Gut the interior, pressure clean it, paint, carpet, new seats and call it good. Exterior.........help. I'm no body man and never have been. You tell me. Dent in driver's door, how do I fix it? Pull it out, bondo and prime? Sand and prime the whole cab? If so, what primer? What color? I heard white covers most sins the best. I have 2 HVLP guns, compressor, DA and most of what I need in the way of tools. Oh, the garden hose on the heater has got to go. The truck.........1967 D-100 Custom w/ a 383 car motor (forged crank) truck tranny and rearend. I'm looking for a 10 day turnaround on this project for use as a work truck. I WANT TO GO CAMPING, DAMN IT.

That doesn't look much like an Imperial to me. Does the motor run?

"Does the motor run?"Does the motor run? That truck is dangerous It runs like a raped ape. I was doing smoke shows for the neighbors the day I got it. Needs help with hole shots. It's got 4" between the tires and leaf springs and needs a posi unit. Plans for that and some 12 inchers on 10" rims in the works.

I kinda like one-wheel-peel myself.
Though, did part out in the mud one day with it and it was a BITCH getting out uphill. Spun like mad and did a lot of free landscaping...
Truck stick? Some of those HDs were 5 speeds and I think an earlier truck it might be possible to switch to. They aren't exactly featherlights though.

4 sp truck tranny. Trouble is it won't stop. I'm currently looking into Scarebird brakes for a disc conversion. I'm desperately trying NOT to turn this into a "project". I need a 2 week turnaround. (Fat chance)

This complaining about things is what starts a project. If you are willing to overlook its imperfections, it won't become a project just a dive. 2 week turn-around and it will become a project. Try to do little bits and do lots of cheapo/junkyard/spare parts swapping. That should keep it from becoming too much of a project.

My opinion, repint it the gold color, or you will have to repaint the jambs. White, yellow, orange, light blue are all colors that hide imperfections. As far as the dent, its a tough one, getting a hammer into the door is tough, also, the metal is stretched, take a little bit of talent to work that. Bodywork is a slippery slope, you have to set limits before you start or you will end up with a show quality paint job on a work truck 3 years later. Best bet, get a bodyshop to work the dent, and ask them to do a quickie single stage color. I know a place here in Dallas that would work the dent and spray it for about $1K. Macco can probably do it for half that.

I think a color-matched work bed would be better. The trim is awful and would probably take lots of work to get right, so I'd dump that too. (lots didn't come with it, they look fine) I'd put in a bench to save time and effort. Replace the carpet, get the little loose things out of the way, paint the engine to match itself allover, and be done.

Well it came with 2 Eddie Bauer Ford buckets (unmounted) and loose layed carpet. I gutted out the interior and pressure cleaned the interior. The seats are in good shape so a friend with a truck mount is cleaning them. Front and rear windows are coming out for painting the interior and exterior. Behind the seat gas tank is out. I'll yank the doors so jamb painting will happen. The dented door I'll drop off to a local body shop to fix and prime. The floor boards are almost flat (and pretty rusty where your feet rest) so I'm putting down some 3/4" plywood (hey, it's a rat rod ). I'm a carpenter, not a welder. I can always put down new pans later. On the up side the hood is finished and in primer. Cleaning the garage out tonight and once it's inside it will go alot quicker. Jim

Whatever you do, dont use rattle can primer under the paint, it will peel and lift, only etch primer is safe to use from a can. Use a 2-part primer, its a lot more durable. the only thing worse than crappy old paint is new peeling paint.

The bed's outta here, it was all dented up and the bottom was rotted. If I want one I'll have to buy another one. Welding work today replacing the rockers and floor pan then it's back to sandblasting the roof, rt. fender and rt. door. I decided to do my own bodywork on the drivers door and I have to say it looks pretty good. I'll know once I shoot it with primer. Amazing what you can do with a little patience, a DA and an oribital sander...........oh, and beer. I got a line on some 12 x 17 rims with 6-1/2" BS so I can get 14" on the ground. It needs it. Color selection made..................Go Mango. I'll post some pictures later today. Jim

Gee, ever wonder why rocker panels rot out? All this dirt came out of the drivers side when I cut it out.

Went for a ride around the neighborhood. The "bucket seat" leaves a little to be desired.
