What brakes do I have..Now I'm Confused??
« on: April 16, 2006, 09:14:40 AM »

I was at the point of buying drums and shoes, so I measured the backing plates. They were 11" inches in diameter so I assumed I had 11" brakes. I ordered 11 x 2 1/2 drums and shoes but  when I went to insatall the shoes they are too big for this backing plate and the rotors don't fit.  Do I have have 10 x 2 1/2?  I thought 10 inch brakes were 2" shoes, but the old shoes measure 2 1/2 across. Do the 10" brakes use an 11" backing plate....I'm confused Huh
(The rear end and backing plates are out of a 72 Charger.)

Measure the ID of the drum.  Both 10 and 11" B-body drums were 2.5" wide. I'm sure there are drum sizes I'm not aware of too - I only know a few of the details form working out the ones on my car..

Thanks, I measured the new drums, they are 11". The old ones weren't with the rear end. I must have 10" brakes. I didn't know know there were 10X 2 1/2, I thought it was only 11 x 2 1/2.  I'll return them for 10" drums and shoes. Thanks!

The backing plates are larger than the drum ID. That's where the confusion came in.
