Where to get the clips that hold hood hinges on?
« on: May 28, 2006, 10:43:12 PM »

I pulled my hood hinges off my 70 today to see if I can repair them (I can't). I trashed one of those round clips that hold the hinges onto the body, anybody know where I can get these new or get a substitute? I don't recall seeing them in Year One's catalog or from the Paddock.

Thanks

Those things are also called Axle nuts or push nuts. Lowes will have them in the parts bins. Same sort of thing keeps the wheels on a kid's little red wagon.

But I do away with them altogether. Go to the parts store and buy a GOOD stainless steel fuel line sized hose clamp and use that instead. Works like a champ, and is reusable.

If your looking for a superior set of hood hinges and the mounting clips, give
SMS Auto Restoration Services Inc a call. I have dealt with them on a number of occasions and they have fantastic parts and customer service! Grin I have attached three photo's of the A-Body hood hinges that I bought from them for our 72 Dart Swinger and they are REALLY nice!  Grin

I bought a used set, and they have as much slack as the ones I have. They came off a low milage car (so I was told) I believe him though, they look to be in good condition.

The problem with the factory hood hinges, even when new, is where they are pinned together. SMS Auto Restoration takes good cores and redrills them and installs larger and MUCH stronger pins in their restored hinges, which removes all of the slop that the factory hinges have. I haven't installed my SMS hinges yet, but thats because I'm still trying to figure out if you HAVE to remove the fenders in order to replace the hood hinges.  Shocked Undecided

It's easier if you remove the fenders, but you can remove the inner fender dust shields. You will have to remove some undercoating first.

Was poking around, and found some arbor collars at Ace hardware. They seem to work really well and secure with a set screw, once I get them on I'll snap a pic for you guys.

Couldn't you just take the inner fender splash shields off to get to them?

My problem with taking the front fenders, front valance, grille ect off, is that I am just finishing up  a year long restoration job on this Dart, so I do NOT want to take the car apart again. The weak hood hinges didn't show up until AFTER all of this work was finished.  Cry \/][ hammer
I was also thinking about removing the doors, as that would be much easier, but maybe I will look into removing the splash shields if I can find them under all of the undercoating and fresh paint on the inner wheel wells.  Tongue Roll Eyes
Needless to say, I like the hood hinge design on my B-Body and E-Body cars MUCH more than the TERRIBLY designed units on this Dart, as they are just a VERY lame  and hard to work on design!  puke explode
