comp cams

I'm looking at comp cams for this engine/combo. street motor, 10:1 auto 2000-2400 stall, 323 gear, headers, dual plane intake. I was told by another wise one on this board to stick in the 230@.050 range. I'm eying the xe275hl, any inputs on this combo? I need decent vacuum at idle to run accy's. I have a set of 906's and a set of 452's to choose from. Is the advertised lift of .525 too much for stock valvetrain hardware?

I found an earlier thread that agrees, .520 the limit for stock heads. I think I'll stay away from this one for this reason. BTW, Merry Christmas!

Always, always, always check the valve guide for clearance between the seal, lock and valve spring retainer. At a certian point known only to Santa's elves you will run out of clearance in this area. It is better to find out BEFORE you bend things than after. I prefer to have at least .075 - .100" of clearance in this area. Yes, you can run less but as fast as things are moving in this area, and depending on valve spring pressures and and accidental valve float, it's better to have more than needed. One "Ooooops!" could mean a tow truck home in front of your friends, parents, neighbor's dog and your Significant other. Small blocks are notorious for this problem at a low (.450") lift on later heads. You don't have to cut for double or PC seals either. I found a broaching tool that I use for cutting down the valve guides just for this problem. I cost me less than $20 at a used machine shop supply place and can be used with an electric hand drill. Maybe I got lucky, I don't know, but it sure doesn the trick!

When i got my wild cam i spoke with a mopar enthusiest, told him what i had in mind in terms of a complete combo of carb pipes diff ect and got him to make me a new one. ive got a therory that some stuff should be done by the experts and some experts are not all they tell you my cam isnt an off the shelf item but then nothin in this car is.
my advise would be t find a good cam guy (hard enuf task sumtimes) and get him onboard with the rest of ur setup. a car ends up being a series of equations and if one is out it throws the rest out and youve wasted time and money.
ive found good workshops like to give advise and i take it in coz they do this all day every day and generally love to help anyone who is doin up a decent car.

I had the MP .484 cam in a stock 383 with 452 heads and stock non adjustable rockers and it was pushing the limit. Retainer to guid clearence was as close as I like it. I would never go over .500 on stock heads without working them. Ron
