Hooker Fenderwells
Yet another solution for bigblock A-bodies is the Hooker fenderwell
header.
Although tire clearance is a major complaint, they get good reviews
for their performance potential.
|
| They can be had in 1 7/8 X 40 X 3.5" or 2 X 43 X 3.5". The headers
shown here are the 2" tubes on a 440.
According to Hooker, the 1 7/8" tubes clear all stick and column
configurations, and also allow power brakes. The 2" tubes only allow floor
shift applications and manual brakes. Both versions do allow power
steering.
Hooker also states that they will bolt onto BS heads, but the exhaust
ports are 5/8" higher and 3/8" further out, causing interference with the
shock towers. A fair amount of modification is required in that case. The
B1 head on the other hand needs a custom configuration, due to problems
with the angled plug locations. Of course, Hooker recommends their own
header kits to solve this problem. |
| A substantial portion of the fender needs to be cut out
for these headers. You can also imagine plug access isn't the greatest. |
| Although it can't be seen here, virtually every set of these
headers have black marks on one tube. Tire clearance is minimal, even with
smaller diameter tires. If you care about tire size and turning radius,
these headers aren't for you. |
