Here's my new best friend Max. He's an American Akita. He was born on 8-3-13. We've had him for just about 3 months now and there isn't a day that goes by that he doesn't make us laugh out loud.
Akita's are extremely smart and very head strong. They will put you to the test every day and he does just that. But they are extremely loyal to the family.
I haven't had a dog for a really long time and I'm so happy that we got him. He's just awesome!

Hello Ted,

WOW, Max is a fantastic looking Akita indeed! thmsup

I do also agree that they can sometimes have troble socializing with other dogs, as our girl Kita will be ok with other dogs she knows, but she isn't all that comfortable with dogs she doesn't know. I think that most of that is because she is so EXTREMELY protective of us her human family.

I'm positive that Max will amaze you with his memory and ability to know what you and your family is going to do before you guys do and he will also amaze you with how VERY intelligent he is!

Akita's are just wonderful dogs and I hope that Max will be your family's best friend for MANY years to come! I will personally look forward to seeing many more photo's of Max as he grows up and also hearing many more cool stories about him!

Hi Richard. Thanks for the kind words about Max.
The breeder that we got him from is only about a 20 minute drive from here so we were able to go to see him every week from the time he was 3 weeks old. That first picture of him in my wife's hand was @ 3 weeks old. It made a huge difference for him when we brought him home. He was so relaxed with us. He never cried at night at all. Except when we attempted to crate train him. EPIC FAILURE!!!!
Here's a shot of him after being home for just an hour. The breeder told us for him to be stretched out and relaxed like that he had to feel at ease and comfortable with his surroundings.
Right now he's really good with other dogs and people. He loves to make new friends. But we're well aware that he will likely not get along with other male dogs when he's matured.
We got a little bit of snow here today (only about a 1/2") so that was a new experience for him. When we get a foot or two, that should be big fun.
I'll keep the pictures and stories comming1

That is very cool that you were able to meet Max at such a young age. He will become extremely protective of your family as he gets older trust me on that! If he turns out like our Kita, you also will NOT be able to do anything in his vicinity without him knowing about it! lol They miss absolutely nothing that's going on around them!

I love puppies, he looks like a teddy bear, good luck with him, and enjoy every minute, they grow old way too fast, I miss my little guy so much.

It's funny that you say that he looks like a bear. The name of the kennel that we got him from is "Kittabears" From day one I would call him by saying "where's my bear"? Most times he comes running unless he's got his stubborn face on.

Well I learned a valuable (and messy) lesson yesterday. Max just loves banana's and we've been sharing one at lunch time for about a week now. BIG MISTAKE! While they are just as healthy for them as they are for humans they go through them like a bullet train. Needless to say all of this healthy eating finally left its mark.
I know one thing is for sure. On Saturday instead of starting to mount my motor plate in the Demon I'll be shampooing the living room carpet.

OOP'S! Well at least you know that his "plumbing" is healthy and in perfect working condition Ted! lol

He's just so darn cute though, you can't keep a frown on your face for long! Just part of the learning process for both of you and as he grows older, I'm sure that he will become like our Kita who would rather explode that ever go potty inside of our home. She's almost like a cat in the way that she grooms herself as well.

Well it might be 25 below zero outside but it's never too cold to play fetch with a stick.
The truth is that even he doesn't want to be outside very long. Plus as of late he wont go out unless I go out with him. What up with that?????

Here's a link that you might enjoy. The breeder that we got Max from always posts photo's of the pups from when they're born and while they're with her for the first 7 or 8 weeks. This is Max's litter. It was only 3 pups and that led to some issues for Max but everything worked out just fine.

Enjoy the show.............Ted

It was really hard to tell Max and his sister Zoey apart. They were like bookends. Fortunately she was already spoken for or we might have brought 2 of them home.

Well Max and I started school the other night. I have to say that I was really apprehensive about it. But it turned out great! As it turned out Max was one of the better behaved dogs in the lot. There was one little guy who barked the entire night and that made most of the other ones start barking. It got pretty loud a few times. Max chimed in once just to let them know he was there too. But most of the time he sat by me and if we were in one place for a while he just laid down.
We learned some good basic things about walking and getting him to come when he's called. Now if it would just warm up a tad so we can go outside and practice.
I know I'm looking forward to the next lesson.

Hello Ted,

From reading Max's bio that you shared with us, it looks like he will be a laid back kind of guy, so his schooling should go very well I'd think.

DusTed74

School is going well. It's all about home work. She shows us how to do it and it's up to the owner to practice at home. Max is a fast learner but he's still an Akita and he can be very independent. (that's my nice way of saying headstrong/stubborn)
Last week they showed us how to get the dogs to lay down. Well Max was having no part of that. The next day my wife spent about a half hour with him and now he does it like nothing. Last night we did meet and greet where she had 2 owners and dogs come together like meeting on the street. The dogs were to sit and stay while the owners chatted for a few seconds and the walk on by. Max did pretty good on that. The truth is with him, he's more interested in meeting the owners then the dogs. He just loves people!
He turned 6 months old on the 3rd so I weighed him then and he was just over 80 lbs. Yup he's more then 10 times what he weighed when he first came home.
I'll get some new pictures of him this weekend.

Thanks for asking about my pal! .......................Ted

Our girl Kita is not even full blooded Akita and she shows many of the same traits you've mentioned Max has Ted.

She is very well trained and I can take her outside off leash for extended periods in our front yard while doing various tasks and she will automatically sit or lay down in her favorite spot and will stay in place regardless of what's going on around us.

Like Max, she is not all that interested in other dogs but does love to interact with their owners and people in general and she also has a remarkable ability to remember people who she only sees on an infrequent basis.

Being as smart as they are, I'm sure that Max is also like Kita in that NOTHING escapes their attention! They have exceptional eyesight, hearing and sense of smell! She can sense a cat ANYWHERE in or even close to her "domain"! lol

Like Sue, I'd love to see some updated photos of Max when you have a chance Ted! thmsup

My wife and I are in total agreement that Max will never be off of his leash when he's outside of the yard. These dogs are hunters and they will go back to that instinct in a heartbeat. If he were to hear or smell something to his fancy he'd be off in a flash. I've heard of way too many of these dogs running off and never to be seen again or getting hit by a car. I'm going to do everything I can to try to avoid that from happening.
If spring time ever does come again I plan to bury rail road ties under my fence so he cant tunnel out. I already know how good a digger he is.
Here's a few shots that I just took of him. H e really wasn't in the mood for posing. He was barking at me all the while I was trying to take these. He was much happier hanging out on the ice.
Thanks for all of the kind words. Enjoy!

thmsup His ears are very expressive! Are they also really soft? The reason that I ask is because Kita's ears are extremely soft and very expressive also.

He's funny. If I'm sitting with him and petting his head I can rub his ears to no end. But God forbid if I touch his paws!
Here he is on guard duty this morning. He knows that he's not allowed on the furniture but if he wants to look out the front window we let him. A few seconds after I snapped this the barking began. He's such a good boy!

well Max has been with us for just over a year now. As you can see he has completely taken over the house.
Here he is in his daily routine of relaxing on the bed that he lets us sleep in at night. Enjoy.
