    1978 Volare

Picked up this beater a couple weeks ago for my daily driver. One of the issues is it has a very quick squeal/chirp when it shifts into 2nd, and a quick chirp on startup. The 1-2 shift is pretty firm, which I don't mind, except for the annoying squeal. The 2-3 shift feels perfect. I put new gates belts on, they made no difference. I would rather not use a belt dressing, but rather figure out what is causing it. Its almost like the trans is shifting so fast, the belts cant keep up for that split second. Just looking for ideas or suggestions. Its a 225/904. I'll try posting a pic.

If you think it's the belt, take the belt off and with the engine cold take it for a quick test drive.

You might try some rough sandpaper on the inside of the grooves of the pulleys, to give the pulleys some texture, and give the belts something to grip.

I just swapped belts and didn't bother to even look at the pulleys.
