does a 8 3/4 have axel tubes or is it all one piece. I keep seeing ads for 8 3/4 center sections. does this mean that there's no gears in it, or is it just the gears? I have a 8 1/4 right now. would it be posible to take the axle tubes off my diff and put them on a bigger one?

The 8 3/4 rear end has a drop-out center case the holds the gears and carrier all together like the ford 9" and bolt on the the front side of the housing. The rear-end is made-up of the housing the center section and the axles.

here's the ad I saw:
8-3/4 Sure-Grip center sect., 489 case, 3.23 ratio

now does that mean that I only get the gears and there's no axle?

You'd be getting whats referred to as the "pumkin"- no axles. It is the removable center part that houses all the gears and mechanicals. You would need an 8 3/4" housing to put them in.

the guy wants $350 for it. does that seem a little high? maybe not for a sure-grip. what would have a 8 3/4 that would still be laying around in a salvage yard?
