All a self etch really does is prep the bare metal to adhear a primer. DONT Use a self etch alone as a primer--thats not what its intended for. Self etch is a mild acid with a zinc chromate type inhibitor(its in such a small quanity that it is only a transpearent tint). Self etch, a epoxy style primer is a better application. Back in my Dupont days, for show finishes, primers were a key to a great base for laying color. Start a foundation properly, your paint will lay better and last longer.

[]{} Just remember, the smoother underneath the smoother the top.I've seen some paint jobs that are smooth as glass on top,(because of wet sand and buff)but if you look closer you can actually see how grainy the basecoat actually is.Especially with lighter color metallics.
