I want to paint the engine compartment...I knocked down all of the surface rust spots and the glaze off of the paint...I have bare metal in some spots...
I have self etching primer....
???? is do I use the self etching primer and then an epoxy primer, vice versa or one or the other...
Thanks,

Self Etch is a pre primer application containing acid to bond and leave a somewhat "rough" paintable surface.

You can put epoxy primer ontop of the self etch as an extra layer and helps hold the lower coat in place.

The common method is :

Use a self ecth primer (wich is typically used for bare metals) ans nearly transparent....however some dark gray or sand primers contain an acid now also to promote adhesion.
Then goes on the epoxy as a "sealer".
Then a fill primer as a filler or as a sealer(which basically is extra thinned fill primer )
Then your paint---in color.
Then Clearcoat if your using it.

REMEMBER, each layer adds to mil thickness...its a pain to repair if ya chip it.

Thanks...I have some fill primer also...I'll just have to pick up some epoxy...
Is there a problem if I apply a self etch to the painted surfaces....there was no rust problem on them so I just knocked off the glaze...
