What is the difference between the DART GT and the DART GT CHARGER? I just got a 65 DART GT faded yellow with black interior with a notch on each side of the rear valance under bumper. My buddy says its a DART GT CHARGER. Whats the difference between the two?

1965 Dodge Darts

The ’65 model was given a minor facelift with a new front clip and oval taillights. The author finds this year as the most cosmetically attractive. This year also brought about more interesting mechanical options. A hotter 273 4bbl was added to the list of engines. Transmissions remained unchanged, but the automatics were now shifted with a lever, either on the column or the floor. Cables still operated the transmissions, however. The stronger 8.75 rear end was now optional, along with four-piston front disc brakes.

There was also a couple special editions available. The Dart Charger is a very rare edition that combined the 273 4bbl, heavy duty suspension, mag wheels, special badges and a special soft yellow color exterior. There was also a cheaper version that did not include the badges. Since it is hard to identify which cars came originally with the 273 4bbl from the VIN number, look at the rear valance. There is a small rectangular cutout (about 6.00” X 0.75”) on the driver’s side, just above where the resonator was mounted. Ordinary Darts did not have this cutout.

The badges were added to a very few west coast 65 Dart GT models with the Charger 273 (ALL 65-67 235hp 273 four barrel engine in Darts were known as the Charger 273). The cars with the badges also got 13" Cragar S/S wheels. There was only one notch on the valence on these cars.

Where did your car come from? Many years ago I knew a guy out of the Madera, CA area with a pale yellow 65 that was NOT badged. I have no idea where the car ended up.

65 Dodge Dart GT Charger 273

I bought one new and it was wonderful and fun to drive. 273 4BBL 4-speed. They only came with the light yellow and black half-top vinyl accent. I traded for 66 Charger and have always wished I still had the 65. I worked for a Dodge dealer just before I bought mine, and the advance info for sales people was that this was a Southern California car only. Not very many were made, especially with the resonator. I believe the state made them change to standard exhaust, which mine had. I have not seen one since I traded mine until seeing this post. I have searched long and hard on the internet and at Mecum and Barrett-Jackson for over two years. The round badge is unique to this model, and the wheels you show are correct.

Notched rear valance

Greetings- Presently the owner of a '65 270 convertible with a 225 (rough shape, going to be my parts car). Very close to buying a '65 convertible GT 273 4 barrel. Have a question. This GT has the 273 4 barrel, and fender tag supports it as being original. Also Vin starts with L4 supporting original 273. However, I am pretty sure there is no notch out at rear drivers side valance.(from the pictures).
Did all '65 273 4 barrel darts have this notch, or were some of them put out without the resonator and notched valance?

Love this site and the info within..
Thanks!

Boy, does this bring back memories! The parents of a buddy of mine bought a '65 Dart GT convert. It was burgundy, with black top, interior, 273 2bbl with a 4 speed and posi. FUN car. We use to love to do standing starts, drop the clutch and see the dual tire stripes on the road. It scooted along pretty good, considering we were too young to know anything better.

As for the 273 4bbl cars, there was a gold, '66 GT with a 273 hiperf 4 speed a few miles away. We use to cruise by that house and drool at the back of that car, sitting in a car port with that cool, retangular exhaust tip sticking out. Geez, I use to love seeing that car sitting there, but never saw it out on the road. We knew what it was though. Awesome cars!!!

Oh, and the GT convert. had Crager S/Ss on it! Cool looking car in it's day. Don't know where the wheels came from, as the parents were farely frugal and I can't imagine them putting them on. Maybe dealer add ons...

I wish you the best with your rare 65. Although I don't know where sheet metal for it is available there may be others here that do. But, in order to get their attention you should post a new thread on your project and include a photo or two rather than tacking it onto the end of a thread that has been dead for 11 years. If you start a new post your request for information will be at the front of the line where everyone will see it, not buried under thousands of pages.
